Winding Down

12 Jun

I’ve been out of the classroom for four and a half weeks.  I go back for one class in about a week and a half.  Summer break is quickly coming to an end.

I’ve slept a whole heck of a lot more.  I’ve watched a whole heck of a lot more tv.  I’ve run more.  I’ve eaten better.  I’ve “done lunch” and stayed up way too late to watch John, David, and Conan.

I kind of like this gig.

But, it’s all coming to an end.  How does summer fly by so fast?  Granted, the load of one class is much less than five, and it’s for six weeks which flies by too.  But, my friends, the needed break has been amazing!  I’ll never ever complain about the schedule that the job of college professor provides.  I’d recommend it any day.  And here’s another recommendation…

Dr. Robinson’s infomercial plug of the week:
After several weeks of research, I ordered a MagicJack.  It seemed to good to be true.  I’m giving it two thumbs way up.  For a long while, I went without a house “land line” phone.  When I started teaching an online course I got Vonage so I’d be able to work from home and students would be able to have a point of contact.  Plus, it’s hard to balance a cell phone between your ear and shoulder and a house phone is always better for that task.  Vonage was up, and was about $20 a month, and after I saw the MagicJack commercial, I began looking.

It’s only $39.95 to get setup and includes the first year of service, and then $20 a year after that, with no contract.  Did you get that?  That’s the price per YEAR!  And it’s crystal clear.  If you have high speed and a desktop computer, I can’t see why you wouldn’t get it.  Cons: your computer has to be on (which mine always is) and I don’t think it would work well if you had a laptop and took it everywhere, and you can’t port a number (keep a number you may already have).  Pros: Free long distance, call waiting, and all that jazz, none of the extra taxes and fees and crap, you can take it anywhere you want (even oversees if you can plug it into a computer) and you can use a house phone with it.  I figured out how to tap it into my house wiring (really easy, if you want to know holler and I’ll tell you how), so I can use the service wherever there is a jack in my house.  I’m not getting paid by these guys at all folks–I just think it’s a great deal that has worked for a week now!

And if you want my new digits, well, in the words of my favorite student email salutation writer:

hollaatchyaboi.

Happy Friday!
